Comfort food season is coming - tips to stay on track

Don't let pumpkin spice lattes beat you! Enjoy these tips for staying active and eating clean, even during pie season.

Eat Seasonally

The smell of ginger and garlic, the warmth of roasted sweet potatoes, and the sweetness of a freshly picked apple–all of these are beautiful reminders of Fall and the bountiful harvest it offers. Eating seasonally and locally offers fresher produce, more organic and sustainable options, and you’re supporting your community. Fall foods range from garlic to broccoli, to pumpkins and cranberries–all of which have the ability to create healthy, immune boosting, and nutrient dense comfort foods. Looking for a filling and pumpkin spice-inspired breakfast? Skip the latte and unnecessary added sugars and give our Pumpkin Overnight Proats recipe a try! It’s as easy as combining five simple ingredients and letting them sit in the fridge overnight. Hearty and filling meal prep complete! Need a Meatless Monday option for dinner? Get your daily dose of fiber and potassium with our Twice Baked Protein Sweet Potatoes and a side of your favorite veggies or greens for a clean, well rounded meal. No need to reach for dessert when dinner offers the natural sweetness you’ve been craving.

Utilize the Slow-Cooker

While clean eating can seem like a chore with the temptations of pies and sweet treats lingering, utilizing a slow-cooker to create healthy, delicious, and Fall inspired recipes will help you to stay on track when working towards or maintaining a healthy weight. Slow-cookers are convenient, perfect for weekly meal prepping, and take the guesswork out of planning dinners. The last thing we all want is to come home after a long day of work and shuttling kids to and from after school activities to then have to whip together a healthy, filling, and tasty meal for the whole family. Get creative with it! Slow-cookers aren’t just for hearty soups, roasts, and chilis. Try making some low-sugar breakfast options or after dinner treats like slow-cooker oatmeal or a seasonal crumble.

Sip some tea

Fall is our favorite time of year to sip on warming and spicy blends of tea. Loose leaf or eco-friendly sachets–whichever you choose we recommend reaching for blends that help regulate digestion, soothe the inevitable sore throat, or just make you feel warm and cozy on a chilly night. Tea offers a number of health benefits including boosting the immune system, a super important factor when it comes to that looming flu and cold season.

When in doubt hydrate

As we transition into a new season and away from the later sunsets of summer, many of us might find ourselves indoors earlier. In order to avoid overeating or unhealthy snacking in front of the screen, it’s important to acknowledge the difference between hungry and dehydration. Keeping a reusable water bottle on hand will help to mitigate those sneaky feelings that may present themselves as hunger while also keeping your body properly fueled and hydrated.

Get (back) outdoors

Fall is the perfect time of year to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors without having to face Mother Nature’s extremes. Waking up just 15 minutes earlier to enjoy a quick walk or trail run before heading to work will not only help you get into a more productive routine, but change the mood of your day We tend to retreat indoors once the weather starts to cool off. Instead of opting for the gym or a weekly class why not grab your co-workers and enjoy a brisk walk after lunch. Keeping up on your active lifestyle will also free up a little space to really indulge in that gorgeous slice of apple pie!
