Choosing the Right Protein Powder

Confused over which type of protein powder to buy? With all the protein powders available, who wouldn’t be?

Hundreds, if not thousands of options have flooded the online market. When you seek out guidance via a google search, you’re met with even more confusion. From pea protein to collagen, how are you to know what’s best? The good news…..you’re exactly where you need to be.

Below, you’ll find a list of popular types of protein powders broken down in a way that makes it easy for you to pick the best option for your body and goals.

Plant Protein

Plant-based protein powders are the perfect choice for vegetarians, those who have difficulty digesting animal-based proteins and those interested in incorporating more plant foods into their diet. However, many plant-based proteins aren’t complete on their own. Complete protein sources contain all of the essential amino acids – those your body can’t produce on its own. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein that your body uses to create the types of proteins it needs. Consuming a blend of complimentary plant-proteins (like pea and rice) will ensure you’re getting a greater amount of amino acids and thus more nutrient bang for your buck

Whey & Casein

These two dairy-based proteins are both derived from cow’s milk. Casein makes up roughly 80% of milk and Whey 20% respectively. The nutrient data of both milk proteins are relatively similar, but each offers its own unique benefits.

Whey protein has the highest bioavailability of any protein, meaning it has the highest amount of absorption and retention in the body. It’s also rich in a branched-chain amino acid called leucine, which stimulates muscle growth. It’s important to note that whey protein, in its concentrated form does harbor some lactose, so it may not be the best option for the lactose intolerance.

Casein, on the other hand, is digested and absorbed much more slowly then it’s milk protein counterpart. Because of this, people often take it before bed to help with recovery and reduce muscle breakdown during sleep.

Collagen

Collagen is a protein supplement derived from animal bones, tendons, and skin. Collagen is the key structural protein that ensures the cohesion, elasticity, and regeneration of our connective tissues. Unlike Whey protein, collagen is not considered a “complete protein,” as it only contains 8 of the 9 essential amino acids our bodies require. Since it is not a complete protein, it should be consumed with other protein sources to receive the full spectrum of amino acids. People tend to supplement with collagen to improve skin quality and support bone and joint health.

Quality

When it comes to optimizing your health and reaping the benefits of protein, quality is paramount. You deserve full transparency in the products you are consuming.
