Summertime Nutrition Tips

Is nutrition seasonal? You bet! These tips will help make sure you are getting the nutrition and hydration you need throughout the sweaty season.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Before we get to food, we need to acknowledge the elixir of life: Water. While it may be tempting to reach for an iced coffee or frozen beverage when you’re really feeling the hotter temperatures, try to resist the urge. Your body sweats to regulate your temperature, and if you are like most people, you sweat a lot more in the summer! Prioritizing routine water intake in the hotter months is very important so you don’t become dehydrated. Remember that by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

Nutritious swaps

The majority of Americans only eat three servings of fruits and vegetables per day, which isn’t enough. Pump up your intake by adding fruit-based smoothies (like a sunrise smoothie or a peach smoothie!) to your diet. For a hefty nutritional punch, try Orgain Superfoods powder. While water should be your go-to drink in the summer, there is no reason you can’t enjoy other beverages, too! Skip the sugar-laden frozen drinks and sip on an iced tea. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants and bioactive compounds that promote brain activity and health, making you smarter while simultaneously working to prevent alzheimer's disease and dementia. It has also been shown to improve heart health and overall physical performance. Black tea can help suppress stress hormones, encourage heart health, and can give an often much-needed caffeine boost without the dehydrating properties of coffee. If you’re tempted to add sugar to your iced teas, consider honey and lemon instead. Consider keeping some healthy Orgain on-the-go nutritional shakes handy for those busy days of summer. Making sure you have easy access to healthy options is a great plan for staying ahead of summertime cravings.

Nice cream

Speaking of cravings. Obviously nothing will taste as incredible on a hot summer day as a dripping ice cream cone, but there is something that comes pretty close: Nice cream. You may have seen it on your favorite vegan blog or on a foodie instagram, but to really understand you have to try it for yourself. This dairy-free dessert substitutes all the heavy cream and sugar of ice cream with one ingredient: Bananas. Peel the ripest (but not ruined) bananas, cut them in to sections, and put them in your freezer for at least five hours. When they are frozen solid, put two cups into a food processor and add whatever flavoring you want! Orgain Peanut Butter or Creamy Chocolate Fudge Protein Powder are the perfect way to flavor your nice cream while adding clean vegan protein to the delicious equation. Our on-the-go protein shakes are another super simple way to whip up your next batch of nice cream. Try this simple three ingredient Strawberries & Nice Cream Smoothie Recipe asap!

Mix it up

Eating the same veggies day after day can get a little bland. Be brave and try some new, seasonal vegetables. Biodiversity in our diets has been shown to prevent against disease and increase absorption of vitamins and nutrients. So get to the farmers market or your local produce stand and pick up something different. Who knows? You might find a new favorite!

Summer activities

Don’t let the ice cream truck at the boardwalk or the fried dough at the fair deter your fun. Pack healthy options for you and your family and friends. Whip up a batch of Superfoods beet hummus or Supergreens hummus and cut up bell peppers, cucumbers, and carrots for a simple but delicious (and much healthier!) snack to keep your energy up throughout the day. Ever been berry picking? Now is the season to start! It’s a fun way to get outside--think apple picking, but in the summer. Strawberries are packed with fiber, vitamin C, magnesium, and potassium. Blueberries are a powerhouse berry, full of antioxidants and vitamin K. Regardless of what you have planned this summer, if you’re going to be out in the sun all day, pack a refillable water bottle, lather on the SPF, and don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat. Add some healthy snacks to the mix and you have the perfect summer day ahead of you.
