Greet the Heat: Five Natural Tips for Staying Cool

Is it hot in here or is it just us? Summer months mean hotter days and it can certainly be hard to have the same energy levels we have in the cooler months. Let’s face it, the heat can be draining and make you feel like exerting yourself as little as possible. But we shouldn’t let it defeat us. With these five natural tips for staying cool you can beat the heat and stick to your normal routine. Stay Hydrated This may seem like a no-brainer, but you can’t beat good hydration. Fill up a jar with lemon water in the morning, and sip on it all day. You’ll not only jump start your digestion, but this is a great trick for keeping you on top of your 8 glasses/day game. Cut Back on Caffeine While you don’t have to cut caffeine from your diet completely, try consuming less during the hot summer months. Not only does caffeine dehydrate you, coffee especially can have a negative effect on your sweat. And by negative, we mean smelly. If it’s hot outside and you know you’re going to be sweating, maybe stick to the one-cup-a-day rule. Dress Accordingly Polyester is a bummer for various reasons, least of which is how terrible it feels in the hot summer months. Light colored, breathable clothing will be your best friends as the temperatures rise. We’re not suggesting yoga pants at the office––unless you work at a yoga studio––but making sure you are comfortable is key to keeping cool under regular work day pressure. Eat Fresh Summer is a great time to avoid your oven and stovetop. Instead enjoy fresh, seasonal fare. Reach for hydrating fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe and fresh greens or try this Peach, Berry, Watermelon Salad. You’ll not only stay cooler, you’ll also be eating nutritiously. Another tip: avoid eating large meals. We all know the sluggish feeling that comes after a big meal but combine that with a 90 degree day and you’ll be a couch potato for sure. By sticking to lighter, more frequent meals you’ll avoid that food coma and feel more energized. Look to Pressure Points Apply cold water or a cool towel to your pressure points to help lower your body temperature. Pressure points can be found on your wrists, neck, behind your knees, and your inner elbows. This a great technique if you’re looking for a quick cooling fix.
